VICE's Will Tilghman tries to make his monthly rent of $965 by working weird jobs posted on the gigs section of New York Craigslist. After staging a photoshoot for a restaurant, screening a bad horror movie, trying a new deodorant, writing a bio for a nice mom, handing out newspapers, doing a timely impersonation of Lord Varys from “Game of Thrones”, and more, Will goes deep into the world of Craigslist to see if he can actually pay his rent by doing odd-jobs.

How about getting a REAL JOB and make a reliable source of income and not scrapping for small change?

Back in 2005-2006 when Craigslist was just starting to spread to other cities, I picked up gigs left and right - people were highballing you more than anything, because not too many workers knew about the site and there was a high demand for all kinds of labor. I - quite naively - thought this would keep up for at least a few years. I still use the site these days, but no one can rely on it in the way you're describing here, especially in dense cities like NYC, LA, SF... if it's a general labor gig, you probably have under 10-20 minutes to respond before the job is taken, and even then, you're completing against dozens of people. Advertising your general services like you did is a complete waste of time when employers know they'll get hundreds of replies from desperate people. The number of people I've seen offering less than minimum wage for skilled labor is disgusting.
